Kick Off 3 – Wacken Open Air 2008 begins Von Joachim Herbert, 31.07.2008Finally! The 19th W:O:A started today! I arrived yesterday, checked in and put up my tent at the VIP- and press-campground. As I was walking around on Wednesday, I recognized that it’s already pretty busy on the festival site.
Vendors are offering their stuff: merchandise shirts, skulls, hats, flags, jewelleries and clothes, clothes, clothes. Even if you come naked, here you can leave fully equipped with all a metal head needs. Check out some of the things from the metal market.
On Thursday the doors opened and more people streamed into W:O:A. The press-campground got really crowded and so got the Edeka store in Wacken, where all metal heads buy their food and drinks. Have a look at the line in front of the store.
By walking around in the backstage area I met Doro Pesch who later that day had a meet & greet with the fans. The line of fans was long but Doro took her time for photos and small talk with the fans.
Girlschool opened W:O:A 2008 and after their show held a press conference and played two songs from their forthcoming album.
After their shows some of the bands hung out in the backstage area which gave me the chance to take some nice pictures. So have a look at Girlschool, Lauren Harris and Nashville Pussy backstage.
Later that evening Iron Maiden hit the stage. Bruce Dickinson and the guys rocked Wacken at the biggest show they ever played in Germany. Bruce was impressed by the amount of people – and he wanted to see them all! Due to a crane he couldn’t and got really pissed. After shouting at the two poor staff members a few times (“Put down the fuckin’ crane. We’re not at the recording of a TV show, we’re at a rock concert”) they finally put down the crane and Bruce could see them all – 70.000 fans partying with Iron Maiden!
