Spanish bull too strong for the Germans Von Joachim Herbert, 29.06.2008The dream is over – Spain is the new European Champion. Germany lost the final 0:1 after a goal from Fernando Torres in the 33rd minute. And we lost deservedly. The Spanish controlled not only the ball, they controlled the whole match most of the time. Where was the German joy of playing as we saw it in the game against Portugal?
Where were the forwards Klose, Podolski and later Kuranyi and Gomez? Did Gomez even touch the ball at least one short time?
And where were the strong defenders we used to call our own? Metzelder and Mertesacker played a weak tournament, Jansen wasn’t available after two games due to a shoulder injury. Yeah, right. This seems to be a good excuse if you don’t play well and your coach won’t select you again.
And what about Michael Ballack, the captain? He was a leader concerning his appearance on the field, but not concerning his performance. Too little creativity, not enough ideas during the match and again the curse of loosing an important final stroke Michael Ballack. After the Champions League final with Chelsea he lost the second important match within a few weeks.
So now it’s time for holidays for the German players. Only a few more weeks and then the Bundesliga starts again. I’m really looking forward to the new season. How about you? Are you excited or just a little tired of football? Let me know…

Spain played very well and deserved to win considering their consistent performance throughout the tournament. The goal was, unfortunately for Lahm, an individual mistake. But Spain was always closer to the second goal than Germany to the equalizer. But now it’s history!
Looking ahead the Bundesliga will be on our minds soon. Am I excited??? Not a bit!!!
What can we expect? If we are lucky we will see on the first day on top of the table a team which is not called Bayern Munich. Because already after the second game Bayern Munich will lead the pack and won’t look back. So pretty much what we have seen last season!
I wish I wouldn’t be right!
