Lucky winner Germany Von Joachim Herbert, 25.06.2008What a game! This time the Germans were the lucky ones and turned the semi-final against Turkey in the last minute. A goal by Philipp Lahm smoothed the way to the final on Sunday.
After a monotonous start for Joachim Löws team against a strong Turkish side, Turkeys Ugur scored the first goal for his team. But Germany offered a quick reply. The dream team Schweinsteiger & Podolski stroke again and only four minutes later it was 1:1.
The Germans played surprisingly weak with no way of dominating the match. But we came back in the game when Miroslav Klose scored his second goal in the tournament. Now we’re on our way to the final – that’s at least what everybody thought. But – as usually – the Turks came back in the last minutes of the match. With only 240 seconds to go, Semih equalized and it looked like extra time for both teams.
But this time the Germans beat the Turks at their own game. Philipp Lahm scored the third goal for the lucky winner in the last minute and so we made it into the final. Not many expected our team to make it that far.
So how do you see the game? Is Germany a worthy finalist? Or would you have preferred to see Turkey in the final?

Indeed Germany was very lucky to win the match. But that was Turkey before also for three matches in a row. So, finally they run out of luck!
The only positive thing from this match, apart from the result, is the German efficiency. Already against Portugal the Germans didn’t waste many chances to score and against Turkey it was just impressive. The very first chance with Poldi to Schweini and what a finish - I guess this is called killer instinct.
The German defence was again the weakest link in the German team and it doesn’t look promising for the final where they face in Spain a fantastic attacking side. Germany need all their efficiency to come out victorious from this classic final!
Good luck and may the best team win!
… and may the best team be Germany
